Description:
Small delicate finch of Australia; pale grey back, wings, tail, white & black barring & spots, buff underparts, white chest with black bar encircling, pale blue/white face mask with black bar encircling, darker brow, blue/grey beak; seed eater; usually in pairs of small flocks once seen in quite large flocks but habitat destruction, predation & other factors have caused decline; soft calls & chips; can become used to human activity & frequently seen in gardens and parks. Two forms occur - a black rumped & white rumped form.
Habitat:
Found throughout much of eastern & northern Australia from Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Northern Territory & northern parts of WA a far way inland. Prefers areas where some dense understorey is available & seeding grassland, also near water sources.
These ones (group of four) found in bushland amongst Lantana and close to one of the last remaining small waterholes on the property (north east NSW).
