Description:

It is a herbaceous perennial or biennial plant. It reaches on average 50 - 120 cm of height, max of 2 m. From large reddish rhizomatous roots rises a striated, hollow stem with bristly hairs. The leaves can reach 50 cm of length. They are pinnate, hairy and serrated, divided into 3 - 5 lobed segments.

Habitat:

Native to Europe (except Iceland) and Asia. It prefers rich in nitrogen, moist soils.

Notes:

It is edible, for example its shoots picked before they have fully opened or cooked stems. The green seeds are also edible and make an excellent addition to chutneys.
