Great spotting! Such an unusual design, but that's Mother Nature!
Congratulations on the SOTD, Kate. It really deserved it.
Congratulations Kate, this awesome little fly has earned you another Spotting of the Day! We think this colorful little fly looks like it has insects painted on its wings – can you see them? Goniurellia munroi's distribution: Gambia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, South Africa. Wing pattern #7. Goniurellia omissa's distribution: South Africa.
Just unbelievable Kate, very interesting spotting, congrats and thanks for sharing
Thanks, Maria. I've put this spotting as possibly Trupanea sp. for the meantime.
How wonderful that you got photos of this fruit fly. I was amazed when I first saw an article about them. http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/science/fruit-fly-with-the-wings-of-beauty#ixzz2jhxlLGaH The Trupanea species are in southern Africa; see this link from South Africa: www.geller-grimm.de/londt/afro.pdf‎
So far, I have been unable to track down any information on Goniurella being recorded from southern Africa. This could mean that this spotting is a different genus, the information on its presence isn't easily found, or it might not have been recorded previously from this area. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the ID, Agnes, and the very interesting link.
Wow, that is unique! A pattern of another insect on it, I wonder if that's so predators go for its wings instead of its body?
Unbelievable! Never seen a thing like this.
