Field Notes

Description:

A plain reddish-brown beetle, but that when magnified is quite beautiful, with gold colored hairs on the elytra with tiny black spots. It is about 1 cm in length. When I put 2 of them together, they rushed up to greet each other and stayed that way for several minutes. This beetle fooled me into thinking it was a Cerambycid! Family Oedemeridae.

Habitat:

Garden lights, semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, 2,200 meters. Active at night.
