Field Notes

Description:

This deciduous shrub (~ 5 ft.) has small, long bell or urn-shaped white to very light pink flowers. The flowers are 0.33 inches (8.4 mm) long. This is a species of blueberry (Vaccinium ssp) and is likely Highbush Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum), but it could be a similar species.

Habitat:

Observed growing in the open in a moist area on the dam of a pond. This one was photographed at Silver Bluff Audubon Center near Jackson (Aiken County), SC.

Notes:

I'd like to thank Dr. Steve Hill of the South Carolina Native Plant Society for his help with identification. See the reference titled 'Ken's Blueberry in SC" for more information on getting assistance with identification of native plants in South Carolina.
