Florida Cottonmouth
Agkistrodon piscivorus conanti
25.8409, -81.0342
Field Notes
Habitat:
aquatic environments, cypress flats and wet prairies, and throughout the swamp in general.
Notes:
According to geography, this is the Florida subspecies of the Cottonmouth (a.k.a. Water Moccasin). Found this beauty blocking my path at a narrow wet section of the Florida National Scenic Trail heading south from the Oasis Visitor Center in Big Cypress National Preserve. It followed me with its eyes as I moved around to get a few pics. It only opened it's mouth briefly in a threat display when I moved my walking stick close to it to see if it would move away. It never budged though, so I ended up going around it. I had very much hoped to see one on my swamp walk.
