Field Notes

Description:

Medium sized dove, mainly-grey with pinkish breast. It also sports a discreet neck semi-collar. Because of the naked red skin around the eye, it can be confused with Red-eyed Dove (which happened to me when I first posted this spotting), a larger and more massive pigeon. Between the two, sure ID tell is the yellow eye, as the Red-eyed Dove has it dark.

Habitat:

Fairly common but localised in Southern Africa and looks for proximity with water. Here, seen in Kunene region of Namibia (northwest), around Sesfontein town, in arid open acacia tree-and-shrub landscape, very dry (but still magnificent and rich in wildlife) at the moment, following a three-year dry-spell. This beauty was observed around a water point, a small stream ending with beautiful cascade and a pool, in a small valley much greener than the rest of the area.
