Field Notes

Description:

Large (in my opinion) millipede, probably in excess of 4 inches long. Dark brown/black segments with lighter reddish brown in between them.

Habitat:

In leaf mould and general debris on stone steps in an organic garden. Once disturbed, it travelled up the wall and disappeared into similar damp leafy debris under a lavender bush.

Species ID Suggestions

American Giant Millipede

Narceus americanus

Comments (1)

These are always cool to find. They are quite harmless, but will emit a very foul-smelling yellow liquid in self-defense. (and I mean FOUL! eww) This liquid can cause skin irritations and eye issues, so always always always wash your hands if it gets any on you. Quoting wikipedia " Many other millipedes secrete hydrogen cyanide, and while there have also been claims that N. americanus releases hydrogen cyanide, this is not true. They do however, excrete a substance that causes a temporary, non-harmful discoloration of the skin.[5]"
