Field Notes

Description:

It has a reddish-brown body that is approximately 2 inches long. Males have black and yellowish orange stripes on the thorax. Wings are transparent and the abdomen is elongated. Females have a 4 inch ovipositor at the end of their abdomen, but males do not have an ovipositor.

Habitat:

I saw at least 4-5 of these congregating on a section of a fallen tree. I didn't notice a female nearby, but I was hiking with my 2 little kids, who were unwilling to stand still long enough for me to investigate further!
