Red-backed Salamander
Plethodon cinereus
41.5867, -73.4118
Field Notes
Description:
Typically, they have a black body with a bright red stripe down the middle of their back. But, they can also be black without the red stripe. Their bellies are black and white. This salamander was about 3-4 inches long.
Habitat:
This was the second red-backed salamander that I found at Roaring Brook Nature Center on the same day. I found this one under a rotting log near a stream, approximately 1/2 mile from the first spotting. The first one I saw had a red stripe on its back, but this one had a tan stripe instead - a good example of the color polymorphism exhibited by this species.
