Wildlife Spotting

I found this strange cocoon hanging upside from a thin branch, around 2 feet from the ground. It is large (between 6 and 7 cm), black, and looks like coarse woolen cloth. There are several red threads on the surface of the cocoon, but I think they are fallen stamens from some flower nearby.
