Field Notes

Description:

A black, red back female Bibio hortulanus spp Graecus, spotted while mating with its smaller/ total black/ bigger head male, in my front balcony...Clearly the species is dimorphic, and this particular subspecies, is endemic in Greece. They become more visible as a species during the mating period, when they sit in open sunlit spaces.

Dear @RachaelB, thank you for your ID suggestion, it fits perfectly :) Updating ASAP!
The red one is the female and the male is the small black one. Here are a few of my spottings of them: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/15697281 http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/16710057
Can't believe how different they look like :)
