Field Notes

Description:

A medium large biting fly.

Habitat:

Mixed forest. Flew in the open window of my moving truck.

Notes:

We have an abundance of biting flies in my neighborhood. These are not the most abundant but they pack a powerful bite. Biting flies seem to work together, flying around your head and bumping into it is very distracting. While swatting them a few will land on you and bite. Sometimes there are several species participating. All these flies are attracted to dark moving objects. Walking, running or biking down our roads can be daunting. Of course when you stop the whole cloud catches up to you. Black rear view mirrors are very attractive to them. Fortunately they are only abundant for short periods of time.
