Giant Mesquite Bug
Thasus gigas
20.53, -100.36
Field Notes
Description:
The first adult I saw this year. Large Coreid of about 4cm body length. Dark grey/brown base colour, with yellow venation on hemelytra; legs are black with red/orange bands; antennae have a distinct orange and black flap on the 3rd segment. This colouration is aposematic, but more conspicuous in nymphs. In Hidalgo, Mexico, where this species is eaten, they called "Xamues".
Habitat:
Found in 'El Cimatario', a national park in semi-arid area just outside the city. The rainy season is now in full swing and many animals are venturing out.
Notes:
Found this article about the ingestion of this species, among other things, to treat type II diabetes.
