Field Notes

Description:

Medium sized butterfly (about 5 to 6 cm wingspan) with all orange appearance, belonging to family Nymphalidae. On a closer view, there is a range of blue spots, bordered in brown, on wing edges; and a range of dark brown and yellow markings on forewings.

Habitat:

This is a common Eurasian species, and very common in our area (pays de Gex; the area between Jura Mountain range and lake Leman). This one seen on slopes of Jura mountain in protected area. Alpine environment, mixed but predominantly coniferous forest.

Notes:

I was very surprised to see this fella disappear from the eye of my camera in a heartbeat... only to discover it perfectly camouflaged and sitting quietly on that scorched moss (photos 3, 4 and 5)
