Field Notes

Description:

The Australian Tiger is a large yellow and black dragonfly, and a species of clubtail in the family Lindeniidae. It is the largest breed of clubtail in Australia, with a wingspan of 100mm and length of 70mm. Males are identified from females by two curved flaps below segment eight of the abdomen, but I've managed to identify this spotting as male from the shape of the wings. The Wikipedia reference has provided very clear images of both male and female wings for comparison.

Habitat:

Australian Tigers are commonly found near rivers, lagoons, lakes and ponds. This pond was situated in remnant eucalyptus woodland on the campus of Griffith University, Mt. Gravatt, which is adjacent to the Mt. Gravatt Conservation Reserve. Vegetation in and around the pond included blue water lilies and cumbungi (bulrush), both being favourite dragonfly perches.
