Field Notes

Description:

The Dorcas Copper butterfly has a wingspan of about 2 cm (1 in). The male is brightly colored (although this male has faded) with an iridescent purple forewing with black spots and dark border above and more orange below. The hindwing is similar but with an orange check mark along the hind edge.

Habitat:

I photographed this individual in a large bog in northern Minnesota.

Notes:

This insect is perched on the flower of a pitcher plant.
