If you happen across any more of these little guys here is some info that might help: http://www.naturalheritage.com/citizen-science/past_projects/box_turtle/turtlebasics.aspx http://www.squidoo.com/box-turtles-louisiana Second link is a fun website with info. Thanks for helping this little guy off the road!
If you are not sure about the 3 toes, as this is a sub-species you could stick to the main species (Common Box Turtle, Terrapene carolina) and quote the following references. . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_box_turtle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-toed_box_turtle These links will help to explain the differences regarding the 3 toes on the hind feet. Although helpful, the sub-species is not essential for Project Noah if there is doubt. As all our experts are volunteers, we have no control over when they are or are not available.
suggested as three toed box turtle. only thing is his front feet where more than three toes. are the back feet supposed to be three toed? we let him go behind our house next to the faucet for a drink before his journey
Interesting find. Welcome to the Project Noah community.
Hi Alaina and welcome to Project Noah. Hopefully one of our experts will be along shortly to take a look at this, in the meantime it you can make some measurements which may help them. They should also be able to advise you on taking proper care of it and returning it to the wild in a safe place. In the meantime perhaps you would like to read our FAQs section and the other links along the bottom of this page to find out more about us.
