Field Notes

Description:

red with black markings

Habitat:

a nest of them found in rotting wood.

Notes:

Thought they were tiny ladybugs or some sort of lady beetle. Now wonder if they are stinkbugs. This vegetable garden had loads of assassin bugs last year and now has a lot of ladybugs (more than normal).

Deanna, I think you are on the right track! This looks like a Predatory Stink Bug nymph. Nymphs can be very difficult to identify as many of them look quite similar when they are young, but sometimes they have distinct coloration or patterning that can help.
