Yellow Bellied Sapsucker
Sphyrapicus varius
41.9633, -87.634
Field Notes
Description:
A medium sized woodpecker with a black and white body, a red cap and red throat.
Notes:
In the first picture you can see the row of horizontal holes these birds make in tree trunks. When the sap starts leaking out of the holes, the sapsucker not only eats the sap, but also any insects that are stuck in it.
