Field Notes

Description:

Spotted salamanders are a wide ranging species, living in the Eastern half of the US. They are commonly associated with spring, as early warm rains spur them from their burrows to their breeding ponds. In Indiana this species is usually done breeding by now, but the unusual weather this year seems to have delayed them a little.

Habitat:

Vernal pool in upland hardwood forest.
