Wood Sorel
Oxalis montana
35.3834, -83.123
Field Notes
Description:
A 5-petaled white flower with pink stripes and shamrock-like leaves.
Habitat:
Hardwood forest
Notes:
The closed flower below is not a bud, but rather a cleistogamous flower that will never open. It self-pollinates and is a "plan B" for seed production should the showy bloom fail in some way. However, because it is self-pollinated it lacks the genetic diversity of the showier flower's seeds.
