Field Notes

Description:

This is a bit of a weird shaped Click Beetle. Family Elateridae. The "color" pattern on the elytra is due to numerous hairs. About 1.5 cm long.

Habitat:

Found drinking from a drop of water on a leaf in the garden.

Notes:

The white spot at the tip of the elytra is only on the left side and is not part of the beetle's natural color pattern.

I went and found the beetle in the garden (white spot and all) and looked at it under a microscope. Definitely and totally a click beetle! :)
You know, my first thought was that it was a click beetle, but it seems to have the 2nd short antennal segment and I thought maybe it was like a Prionus or one of the short horned flower Cerambycids. I'll get back to you on this.
Elateridae, Click Beetle. Antennae are too short for Cerambycidae.
