Swallow-tail Butterfly

Swallowtail butterfly Pupae (chrysalis) tethered to a rock. Note the belt of silk around the upper part and the silk pad to which the tail is attached. These images show the chrysalis after the larval skin has been shed. Butterfly pupae are sometimes formed on the ground without any special protection. Most commonly they are suspended, in an upright or horizontal position attached by the end and supported by a silken girdle. This is the method that is adopted by all the species of Swallowtails.
