Field Notes

Description:

Shiny black beetle with large mandibles. Striations on elytra.

Habitat:

Suburban yard, under a large flower pot.

Notes:

This is most likely this species. Scarites Beetles can be difficult to distinguish from each other. This guy was fast moving and not very cooperative. It did not try to bite me but did attempt to dig down in the dirt or between my fingers frequently as I was trying to get some good images.
