Field Notes

Description:

I know this bird as a Jay and they are "large, almost completely black bird[s]. [They have] a curved beak, a red eye and a large white wing patch, which is seen when the bird is in flight. The bill and legs are black. Both male and female share the same plumage pattern." (Birdlife Australia - http://www.birdlife.org.au/bird-profile/white-winged-chough )

Habitat:

For the first time since I was a child growing up my mum and I saw this group hanging out at the park in Nanango, QLD. The park has a small creek running parallel-ish to the road which kind of borders it from a private paddock.

Notes:

Check out the little video of them cruising across the park: https://youtu.be/dpleImpkXfA These birds are known to associate with Apostlebirds (Struthidea cinerea) - see spotting: https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/1801028717 which also were hanging out at the park! I have such fond memories of both of these species as they loomed large in my growing up years on the farm.
