Field Notes

Description:

Argiope luzona (Walckenaer,1841). This Signature Spider has created a web decoration known as a Four-armed Discontinuous Cruciate Stabilimentum. The upper left "arm" is damaged, probably the result of a struggle to subdue a captured prey insect. You can see this spider's egg sac, in my second photo, sheltered from the tropical sun by a large broad leaf (I think Taro) to which it is attached. In the last photo, I squeezed both the spider and its egg sac into the same picture. It is a poor photo, but shows the relative positions of spider and egg sac.

Habitat:

Spotted in the backyard of the rice mill.
