Thanks Tamar! At least he didn't fly away Gordon!
Camera shy insects--I hate that characteristic as well....grin.
I agree with Gordon that this looks like a Brown Lacewing. I can't tell which one though. I hate it when they are camera shy! ;-)
It was tiny & on the move so it was really hard to tell much detail Gordon. Perhaps the best this is to unidentify it again & see what others think. Thanks for your help!
There are so many look-alikes in insect world, tough to know. The insect in your photos looks like it has its wings folded over its back in a tent-like form. Fishflies tend to hold their wings flat, if I'm not mistaken. Still, it's hard to know... I see you took my suggestion, but just so you know I'm not totally confident in my ID.
Thanks for the correction Gordon. This was a bit slenderer than the ones in the link - I tried for a side view but this little guy was moving too fast for me to focus!
Karen, Have you looked at any of the brown lacewings as an alternative? The 9mm length suggests a lacewing rather than the larger fishfly. See http://bugguide.net/node/view/3577/bgpage for info and ID for brown lacewings.
