Field Notes

Description:

Drake has a black bill, face and head which turn to an iridescent green on the top and back. Upper body various shades of black breast and forward sides white while sides are a rust brown in color. Hen is mottled shades of brown with white to tan feather margins. Both genders have long wide bills thus the name shoveler.

Habitat:

Marshes, lakes, ponds, and prairie potholes.

Notes:

Drake is one of the most colorful in North America.
