Field Notes

Description:

Smooth earth snakes are small fossorial snakes. Fossorial is just a fancy way of saying they live underground. The are small with an olive brown base color and tiny black dots running down their back. This is a mature female found under some tin sheeting. She had probably been spending the winter using the adjacent ant nest as a hibernacula.
