Eurasian Griffon
Gyps fulvus
42.6542, 44.6265
Field Notes
Description:
Huge and magnificent beast when soaring like this, moving in slow and circular motion without effort. The wingspan is about 2,5m; wings large and broad, with long "fingers". The bird is brown, with long black flight feathers. These looks like immatures, as the beak looks grey, and the fluffy necklace or "shawl" looks brownish to me... (adults would have bright white necklace or 'shawl' at the base of the neck, and yellow beak).
Habitat:
Seen from the top of one of the lower peaks of Caucasus (some 2200 - 2300 m of altitude), soaring over the valley at some 1900m, occasionally followed by a group of Choughs. The valley and these slopes are regularly beaten by harsh winds; and are intermittently covered by coniferous groves, thorny shrub groves, mountain grasslands and barren rocks.
Notes:
I apologize for the very low quality of shots (especially for the second one), but these were actually the best ones I managed - low light combined with long distance andthe movement... However, I really wanted to post them, since it was the first time I got these magnificent beasts in my shots.
