Eastern Newt
Notophthalmus viridescens
34.58, -84.69
Field Notes
Description:
This photo doesn't really do this red eft (Notophthalmus viridescens) any justice. I really didn't want to disturb the little guy too much, so I sacrificed a better shot.
This is the juvenile stage of the Eastern newt's life cycle, the eft. It is a terrestrial stage--while its larval and adult stages are aquatic.
Habitat:
Ranger, Georgia--under some really moist/decaying leaves, high on a ridge in a hardwood forest (lots of oaks and hickories). It was likely feeding on snails as there were a plethora of them in the area!
