Field Notes

Description:

The forewing of this small butterfly is yellow with a broad brownish black margin, while the hind wing is yellow with black or dark brown on the terminal edge. The margin is weakly scalloped. The underwing as seen here is yellow with specific markings that allow to differentiate if from other yellow species found locally.

Habitat:

Spotted here in weeds at the edge of a creek. This species inhabits open or disturbed grassy areas including forest clearings, between sea level and about 1000m.

Notes:

Eurema alitha subspecies are found in the Philippines, Palawan, n. Borneo, Sulawesi, Java, Bali, Timor, West Irian, Papua New Guinea and most of the islands in the South Pacific. In Australia it is found in the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Queensland. Other Eurema sp. found in the area include brigitta, hecabe and smilax.
