Field Notes

Description:

Thought at first it might be a female Cinnamon Teal or Redhead but I honestly don't have any idea what duck this is.

Habitat:

Open area of the Otter Tail River in NW Minnesota

Notes:

This was the only one of its kind I could see from the bridge but there may have been more. This one was with Hooded Mergansers and Mallards when i saw her.

AshleyT-Thank you for identifying this one for me. The color of the bill and plumage threw me off. The images of Gadwalls in my bird book show a brown or orange tinted bill and mottled feather coloring. Having never seen one, I did assume it was a female based on the dull or plain coloring. According to my bird book its also in question if we even have them in our area so I'm thrilled to find one here...even if only temporarily. :-)
Gadwall are quite plain as far as ducks go, but that doesn't mean they are female! The black butt on the male gives it away as being a Gadwall.
