Field Notes

Description:

Very large bird, entirely white save for black wingtips and orange or yellow beak.

Habitat:

A small flock was floating in the middle of Prospect Lake, a large artificial reservoir in Memorial Park near downtown Colorado Springs. The lake is stocked with trout, which may have been an added stimulus in attracting these majestic birds.

Notes:

I nearly missed this shot. I had my back turned to the lake, engaged in a conversation with a friendly stranger when the flock made a swift but graceful exit.

They're great to see fly overhead on a sunny day.
