Description:
Large Saturniid moth, 10 cm wing span, yellow-brown in color with brown markings and a tiny window in the upper wings. This is a male and a second species of Copaxa found in San Cristobal de Las Casas. This species has small eye-spots and windows. The last picture was taken on July 10th 2013 in the same place.
Habitat:
Found him in the bushes on the garden wall, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters. He had also come to an ultraviolet light in the garden 2 days earlier (the last 2 pictures).
Notes:
Found in Mexico and Central America. The wings of the male are more curved in outline than those of the female and the antennae are of course, more pectinate. The larvae will feed on Oak and willow, both abundant in San Cristobal de Las Casas.
