Field Notes

Description:

It is Arthropoda with 8 legs. It is about a centimeter in length. The head and legs are brown but the thorax is a pearly blue color.

Habitat:

This species was found next to the trail in Tecolote Canyon. The habitat is dry and is primarily made up of scrubby trees and shrubs with weeds and dirt. It lives underneath the surface of the dry fallen leaves on the ground. There were multiple spiders inhabiting the area.

Cool photo! I think what the blue "abdomen" is that you are seeing is actually an egg case being carried by the spider. See this photo: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20071030_Wolf_Spider_Carrying_Egg_Sac.jpg for an example of this behavior. This is probably a wolf spider, but I wouldn't make an ID from this photo. You may remember more details, however, than what is shown in the photo.
