Field Notes
Description:
One of the bigger puffins at 33-14cm and a wingspan of 64-66cm. Weighs in around the 780g mark. In summer (pictured), mostly black with a white face, pale eyes and light yellow feather tufts growing from the top of the head and curling around the back of the neck. The bill in summer bright orange, and grey with a yellow dorsal ridge and white striping on the upper mandible. The legs, feet and eye-ring are all orange.
Habitat:
These birds seen in the Bering Sea between the Commander Islands and the Mainland of eastern Russia on small islets. Otherwise found around the rim of the Northern Pacific from North Japan around to Central California.
Notes:
The first image is of a puffin sitting on an old cormorant nest, and then various other birds near their nesting burrows and finally a bird taking off from the sea which I thought was just a fun image to include.
