Field Notes

Description:

Adult male with mites. The male's eyes come together while the females are separated. There is a much smaller fly next to it to compare size. Males do not bite but instead, feed on nectar and plant juices. The female has mandibles and feeds on mammalian blood. 25 mm in length.

Habitat:

Spotted on a log with "banana brew" a sweet paste applied to logs along trails in a wooded area.
