Field Notes

Description:

Had to put this butterfly in because I couldn't believe it was still flying with so much of its wings missing!

Common names: Common Lime Butterfly, Lemon Butterfly, Lime Swallowtail, Small Citrus Butterfly, Chequered Swallowtail, Dingy Swallowtail, Citrus Swallowtail.

Papilio demoleus is a common and widespread swallowtail butterfly. It gets its common names from its host plants, which are usually citrus species such as the cultivated lime. Unlike most swallowtail butterflies, it does not have a prominent tail.

You could rename it "half of a swallowtail". I wonder if it escaped from a hungry bird.
hahaha, that's what I thought, Kate!
Hi Pam, Papilio demoleus and Papilio demodocus are two different species. BTW: Did you get the PDF I sent some days ago via email? Best!
It's amazing that it was still flying.
