Field Notes

Description:

Weaver ants seen feasting on a colony of termites. For more details, kindly go through the notes. The third pic shows the whole group.

Habitat:

Seen at a small forest near a river.

Notes:

It is a usual site in our forests during summer. The red ants are everywhere, on the trees, the ground, on your legs and sometimes even under your clothes. They are just collecting food for monsoon. Collecting, collecting and collecting. Everything that they can grab. And some are busy preparing their nests. Due to their activity all other bugs are either eaten or hidden. You can hardly find any other bugs except the ants, red or black, but just ants. This Sunday was no different. We found weaver ants first thing when we got ready to shoot. On noticing very carefully we saw that the weaver ants had found a termite colony and were picking up the termites and running to their nests. But, on noticing closely we saw that the ants with the termites (the whole group) was stopping in between. And the ones without any food were tearing the termites from the mouths of the ones that were carrying the termites. They even gobbled many of the termites before picking up others and carrying towards their nests.
I was always under the impression that these ants would carry all food back to the nest and maybe eat with the whole gang. I have seen them religiously carrying anything and everything that they found, back to their nests. Then why this behaviour? Grab a bite before heading for work or do the termites taste delicious that these ants wanted to feast on some before the others? Or am I wrong and they do grab a bite on the job?
Sorry if you found the article very lengthy or my questions stupid :)
