Field Notes

Description:

Two White-bellied Sea Eagles came into roost in a tree away in the distance from our house one evening just after dusk. The following morning just before dawn there was an almighty noise which I thought sounded like geese. I eventually spotted the eagles and managed to get a few photos . Picture quality is not brilliant. First 2 images were taken at dawn, the third was taken later the same afternoon as they were soaring on the thermals, after chasing away what I think was probably a Brahminy Kite.
I'm slightly confused as I was told these were 'immature' but Wiki info below reads that breeding pairs make a honking noise similar to geese

Habitat:

Approximately 1000mtr inland, roosting in a very large tree.

Notes:

Wiki -

A young White-bellied Sea Eagle in its first year is predominantly brown,[12] with pale cream-streaked plumage on their head, neck, nape and rump areas.[16] The plumage becomes more infiltrated with white until it acquires the complete adult plumage by the fourth or fifth year.[12] The species breeds from around six years of age onwards.[18] The lifespan is thought to be around 30 years.[19]

The loud goose-like honking call is a familiar sound, particularly during the breeding season; pairs often honk in unison,[20] and often carry on for some time when perched. The male's call is higher-pitched and more rapid than that of the female.
