Field Notes

Description:

I spotted nearby patches of V. sororia that had a beautiful range of colors. This flower has the typical color (although the photo doesn't really capture the deep violet-blue color).

Habitat:

Along the edges of a stand of young (< 5 years old) loblolly pine trees, and in an adjoining lawn.

Notes:

The leaf in the picture is of a seedling common juneberry (Amalanchier arborea), not part of the violet.

Well, I do understand your argument, before I posted my comment, I had to think whether to post the second part of it as well. I don't know, do as you think :) They're all still beautiful violets whether they're separated here or not! :)

I had considered separating them, especially the one with an official variety name, but here's the logic that I used: (1) They were within a couple of feet of each other, and (2) if I had spotted three birds or other animals of the same species but different color forms together, I would probably consider it a single spotting. Still, I can see the value of separating them. I'll sleep on it. Thanks very much for your comments!

beautiful pictures, but it would be better if you separate them into three spottings, if you ask me. i think the last picture is same species, but different color as well ...
