Scoop Wing Moth
16.7354, -92.6387
Field Notes
Description:
A very unusual Moth with the hind wings held down and folded into an irregular shape. It must help hide the shape of the moth when resting on bark. About 7 mm long. It rests similar to the Plume Moths. Family Uraniidae, Subfamily Epipleminae.
Habitat:
Came to an ultraviolet light in the garden, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.
Notes:
Based on the color pattern and the wrinkle lines in the wings, I suspect that the last two pictures are the same moth with it's wings extended.
