Field Notes

Description:

These birds have a curving crest or plume, made of six feathers, that droops forward: black in males and brown for females; the flanks are brown with white streaks. Males have a dark brown cap and a black face with a brown back, a grey-blue chest and a light brown belly. Females and immature birds are mainly grey-brown with a light-colored belly.

Habitat:

Their breeding habitat is shrubby areas and open woodlands in western North America.

Notes:

I have been trying to get close enough to these little quail families for several weeks. These photographs are from two separate pairs. They get startled very easily and it took quite some time and patience to photograph them. The first pair walked across our driveway and went "flushing" off in a hurry, while the second pair stayed hidden under some trees in the vacant lot next door where I was able to sneak in for a closer view.
