Field Notes

Description:

A species of snailfish, but I am having a hard time finding pictures to confirm ID. When we pulled it in the boat we noticed the fish smelled very bad, despite being alive and it swam away fine when we released it.

Habitat:

Close to Kodiak in a crab pot that was at least 400 ft deep

Notes:

Looks like the fish on this page: http://www.fishbase.org/photos/thumbnailssummary.php?Genus=Liparis&Spec… or the one on page 157 of this: http://juneaunature.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/pdfs/baldwin2013.pdf

First of this genus and species on PN

Thank you Kellii! What did you use as an identification guide?
What a strange looking creature! Thanks for sharing.
Could list it just as a Snailfish -Liparidae
According to Eschmeyer et al. (1983), there are about 50 species of snailfish along the Pacific Coast. Of these, only about 13 occur in nearshore waters (less than 600 fet deep). Most species vary in color, and with or without patterns. They are best identified by various technical features.
