Field Notes

Description:

This small box turtle was attempting to cross a busy highway. After checking to make sure she had no injuries, I helped her get safely to the other side. Good luck little turtle!

Habitat:

Road side bordered by temperate forest. Chesterfield County, Virginia.

Notes:

If you find a turtle in the road, if it looks uninjured, make sure to move it in the direction it was traveling in the same area. Turtles have a very small home range and a good sense of direction (they will travel back to their home range, possibly ending in the turtle's death). If it is injured, contact your local wildlife center or wildlife rehabilitators to find the right care. Make sure to record the location where you found the turtle so that it may be released in the right area once it is healed.
