Description:

Painful biting mite. Almost barely visible on my arm as it was drilling into me. Squished/twisted & photographed on tip of my finger.

Looking at the biting midge photos - I don't think it's one of those, either.
I don't think this is a chigger. Chigger bites start itching long after they've left the scene of the crime - and I've never had chigger bites that were painful - just itchy. This is painful and you can see the little booger drilling its head into you while it's hurting. I squished him mightily!
Chiggers are also awful, though this is probably not one of those. http://bugguide.net/index.php?q=search&keys=+chigger&search=Search
It could be a biting Midge also called no-see-ums, very annoying little creatures. I used to live in Georgia and we had them there. I don't miss them. http://bugguide.net/node/view/19768
