Field Notes

Description:

Flirtation and courtship between two adult Trumpeter Swans three days after Valentine's Day.

Habitat:

On an area of lake that typically stays open from the river flowing into it as well as all along the Otter Tail River in Otter Tail County, Minnesota

Notes:

Courtship...hands down my favorite time to observe and photograph wildlife. Probably my favorite winter waterfowl to watch are these beautiful Trumpeter Swans who I'm told mate for life. I've been watching Trumpeter Swans for four years now but am by no means an expert in the field. In the above images you see a total of three adult Trumpeter Swans. The one laying low in the water with its chest bulging forward is a male (I believe) strutting his stuff or displaying himself and the one floating along the river bank and later rising up in a stretch is the female (I believe) that he's trying to impress. The one on the snow-covered bank appears to be encouraging or enjoying the courtship of the other two. The last image appears to me to be the male doing a victory swim behind the female. Again this is just my impression and what I've garnered having spent the previous four winters enjoying their company
