Field Notes

Description:

Jumping spider, 8mm body length. Very large porrect (forward pointing) chelicerae. Note the helmet shaped cephalothorax in Pic 3. Ant mimic of Polyrhachis sp. ant. At a distance, to me it looked like a back-to-front ant. The abdomen of the spider looked like the head of the ant. The large chelicerae looked the golden-flecked abdomen of the ant. It did cruise around the leaf like an ant.

Habitat:

Spotted in suburban landscaped gardens. Clifton Beach QLD

Notes:

I was very chuffed to have found this little beauty today! A first time spotting for me.

Its great to see such detail - amazing spider and photo, Andrea !
Hi Argy! Yes it did move like an ant, even down to the leg waving which looked like the antennae of the ant sensing the surrounds.
Excellent find. I'd like to see one sometime. Did it move like an ant?
